The History of Mesopotamia from Ubaid to Uruk (5000BC – 3000BC)
Crucial Changes in Mesopotamia in Ubaid Period
Ubaid period marked history from 5000BC to 4000BC. Ubaid people were the first group of human beings populating the southern Mesopotamia. It traces back the era when the population lived in small colonies with a few developing towns across a gigantic lump on the map of Asia (White 19). This era has dominant importance primarily due to its new residential pattern, the art of pottery, and the advent of agriculture.
Ubaid Settlements. Ubaid live in hand-made clay houses with large families. Their residents were also significant, with several rooms to accommodate families and save grains. The northern population used metals to design tools, while southern Ubaid developed tools and pots using fired clay (Ross and Steadman 60). It was the first time when civilization was in infancy with cities and town development.
Agriculture. The most historical value of Ubaid is in terms of farming. They were the first people who began cultivation in the fertile soil of Mesopotamia (White 19). They organized the primary agriculture system with simple farming tools.
Pottery. Ubaid is known, above all, for the art of pottery. They used clay to develop decorated, trendsetting pottery that covered not only the southern and northern parts but also the west coast. They used to make these pots and vessels for trade purposes as well. The discovery of clay figurines in large numbers points out the theological steep of people (Ross and Steadman 59). They used these figurines for religious rituals.
Ubaid, as the first residing group in Mesopotamia and the beginners of early civilization, made a history unless the Uruk period began. The end of the Ubaid period in 4000 gave rise to another unforgettable age of historical value in Mesopotamia- Uruk.
