The Myths of Mexican Immigration
The Mexican government has not always supported the emigration of its citizens to the United States. In the 1960s, a majority of Mexicans could not emigrate due to government restriction. However, the regulations were relaxed in 1970s and the people were allowed to relocate to the United States. The move was mainly economically motivated; they relocated in search for better employment opportunities. Since the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s, the United States started experiencing an unexpected increase in the number of undocumented immigrants from Mexico (Minian 23). Oral testimonies and political discourse can help demystify the two popular myths about Mexican immigrants; the immigration of undocumented immigrants is impossible to control, and the immigrants’ benefited from United States job market more than the US citizens.
The enactment of the Immigration Reform and Control Act by the United States government explains the circular migration of the Mexicans. Although the Mexican workers benefited from the employment opportunities they found in the United States, they were unwilling to relocate permanently into the country. However, the Immigration Reform and Control Act limited their ability to reside as temporary residents (Minian 146). The best way that the individuals could afford to work as temporary residents was by being undocumented. This explains the increase in the number of undocumented individuals in the country. However, the rise of the undocumented Mexicans led to the development and spread of one of the popular myths about the United States being unable to control the immigrants.
