Introduction
Since time in memorial treaties were known as a strategic way of solving a conflict. The treaty between the United States and India did not work the same however, as the United States did not honor the treaty they had signed. Land and boundaries are significant to any community. The Indians, therefore, had the right to defend their property and edges after the Americans failed to honor the treaty. The United States acquired land by something which is called trusteeship. They were able to do so after defeating most of the tribes and the others later sold their property to the United States so that it can stay in trust of them.
The federal government stole about two billion acres of lands and did not stop at that as they still take more something which makes the public unhappy. White men have turned out to be very bitter as the result of the fight over land. Not adhering to the rules of any treaty is wrong as it violates the rights of the people who in most cases are poor and have no means of fighting for their rights.
The Oppression of the Indian People
Indians related their story to that of the Jewish people who were in Egypt for over four hundred years (Simmons, 1000). For the four hundred years they were in that foreign land so much was done to them. They were treated unfairly both emotionally and physically. The Indians, however, feel their four hundred years of poverty has come to an end (Bernholz and Pytlik 10). They, however, realize that unity is strength and for that reason, they have to come together as one tribe if they are to win the fight. It is unfortunate that the Indians would not understand what was written in some of the treaties they signed (Herzog 93). If the whole activity of signing the agreements were fair, then it would have been wise if they wrote the arrangements in a language the Indians would understand.
Lack of understanding made the Americans take advantage of the Indians by promising things that they for sure knew that they would not fulfill (Freeman 117). Most Indians have little or no knowledge of the court cases that were ongoing. In the early days, the treaties allowed for punishment of white people. It was however not a good move as it provoked war among the tribes and the white men (Powell and Staton 14). For a fact, the white men did nothing useful to the Indian people they only brought poverty and diseases to them (Spirling 90). The good thing about the violation of the treaties is the fact that it was able to unite the Indians who now feel that they have to be one to win the fight.
Conclusion
An agreement is one thing that should be respected by both parties that took part in the deal. The few white men who violate the treaties do no justice to the Indian people. Additionally, they create a notion that poor people’s right can be broken as they have no power to fight for their rights. Making peace is a fair idea as communities leave peacefully avoiding the activities which could lead to war. The United States should respect the rights of not only Indians but any other city they get into an agreement with to create a world that is peaceful.
