Timurid Period Art
Some of the significant famous buildings of the Timurid Period include the mosque of Bibi Khanom and the Gur-e Amir mausoleum. The Bibi Khanom mosque was named after the chief wife of Timur to commemorate her. It was built between 1399 and 1404. The Gur-e Amir mausoleum is the place where Amir Timur, the military leader who founded the Tamir Empire, rested. The Timurids are among the final great empires to emerge from the Central Asian region.
Amir Timur brought several artisans from various lands that they had conquered in war. These craftsmen helped Timur to start one of the most brilliant Islamic art and architecture in Timurid Empire. The architectural design was featured by monumentality, wood and ivory carvings, gemstone carvings, harmonization, height, and exteriorization. Decorations in the Timurids art included the art of book- paintings, drawings, calligraphy, ceramics, metal works, and geometric painting. It is also important to note that buildings and structures were constructed and designed in a way to counter the high temperatures in the Middle East. Most buildings were constructed with large windows facing the direction of the wind to enhance a cooling effect in the houses. The buildings were also fitted with bright tiles to reflect the direct sun in the desert. This also helped to provide a cooling effect.
Monumentality in Timurid architecture is seen in structures that were built specifically in remembrance of a particular person or a certain event. Also, these structures were used to commemorate some major historical times and the Timurid cultural heritage.
