Symbolism and the Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a child’s fantasy, and Oz is a self-centered circus magician who after learning that whoever kills the witch will be king of Oz decides to do so, but it is Dorothy the heroine who kills the witch unexpectedly. The story highlights aspects of the US political and economic history. The Wizard is a conniving politician who is everything to everyone, Dorothy is like everyone, and The Tin Woodman is like the exploited workers.
In the Wizard of Oz, Baum represents the Wizard as the crooked American politicians who dupe the public and make empty promises. When the Wizard came from the clouds, people did not know who he was and decided he would not reveal things about himself. Littlefield recasts the Wizard as the President who was committed to ensuring the gold standard is followed as a monetary remedy to reassure the financial markets. In both cases, the Wizard is powerful and more likely to use little information to his advantage.
