In Band of Sisters: Class and Gender in Industrial Lowell, 1820-1850, the author, Horace Bushnell, illustrates how the industrial city of Lowell came into being. He asserts that its inception began in earnest in the 1820s. Its rapid urbanization helped it become the first step of the Industrial revolution in the United States (Bushnell 1). In addition, the author explains why women became the first industrial labor force and the challenges they confronted. He notes that the myriad challenges led to the emergence of feminist and labor movements.
According to the author of the autobiography Early Factory Labor in New England, Harriet Robinson, Lowell was more like a factory village in 1832. In the biography, the author illustrates how that changed dramatically following the emergence of cotton mills. She describes how girls came from as far afield as Canada to work and the exploitations they went through, including poor wages (Robinson par.4). She also mentions the mechanisms women used to better their working terms and the impact they had.
