Short Essay Three. Monument. Assignment: Monument Proposal
Assignment: Monument Proposal
In this assignment your objective is to write a proposal for a monument or statue remembering the enslaved Africans of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Compose this as if writing a proposal to the Congress explaining why there should be such a monument, and what it should emphasize about the slave trade (as found in Voyages.org).
Drawing only on the evidence from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Database make an argument about why there should be such a monument. Try to explain what you can learn from the slave database that should be remembered and memorialized.
Also propose the type of monument you would like to see (statue of an individual or group, a small or large structure).
• Should the monument be abstract or figurative (showing a human figure or figures)?
• What material should be used?
• How large should it be?
• If possible suggest a location
• What text will be provided on a label for the monument?
This discussion should give a good sense of what you think is most important about what we can learn about the slave trade from the database itself (not from any other source for this assignment). So explain key traits of the trade by drawing upon the database.
This essay is part of the set of short assignments comprising 20% of the grade.

Most of the individuals affected were captured from different parts of Africa, such as West and Central Africa, and included men women and children. Various factors promoted the existence and growth of the slave trade, for instance, the decrease of the Amerindian population created the need for exploiting labor from African to work in gold and wells as agricultural sectors in the Americas. According to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Database, it is estimated that over two-thirds of the slaves involved in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade were absorbed in sugar plantations.
In order to honor, commemorate and pay tribute the role performed by slaves in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, there is a need to set up a monument to help in remembering and memorizing the experiences of those who were involved in the trade and their contributions in the various sectors they worked in. Most importantly, the monument would help in remembering individuals who died and suffered at the hands of the inhuman and brutal slavery system, which affected bout over three hundred thousand slaves in the United States over the estimated number of twelve million slaves (Slave Voyages).
