Role of Violence in Politics
After American attained independence through violence, there have been numerous arguments on the legality of violence as a tool of advancing political ideologies and strategies. Throughout its history, America has been faced with numerous revolutions and protests from the early republic. It is, therefore, undeniable, that violence has been an essential aspect in shaping the American politics, especially the period spanning from the early republic to the end of the reconstruction. On of the primal problem of the history in the United States is violence. Since the start of the colonies, violence is what led to independence. The nation was born from violence, and violence continued to shape the political events from the early republic to the era of reconstruction.
Rhodes (2016) said that violence in strongly enshrined in the early years of the United States history. In the early years of the nation, shortly after independence, there were numerous chaotic and violent happening and were based political ideologies. Aaron Burr, who wanted to attain the highest office in the land, killed Alexander Hamilton. The main reason for the duel between Hamilton and Burr was the fact that Burr was denied the governorship of New York. In this regard, Burr was angered by the desire of Hamilton to hinder him from progressing and attaining a higher political office (Rhodes). This clearly illustrates how violence defined major happenings in the American politics at the time. From the 1820s, there was an increase in violence, leading to the Civil War as well increased religious diversity. The happenings during the time was aa precursor to the looming political events in the United States. In the words of Rhodes, “these clashes stemmed from heightened anxieties among native white Protestants about the consequences of Irish and German Catholic immigration for American identity and social harmony” (Rhodes n.p.).
Another essential era that defined the politics in American was the Civil War during the 1860s, which resulted from the southern states’ refusal of the election results. The contest was very unusual because the election was won by Abraham Lincoln after he had secured about 40% of the votes (Rhodes). Although Abraham Lincoln never supported the emancipation and freedom of the negro slaves in the south, many of the southerners sought to breakup from the union in order to prevent the emancipation of the slaves. In this regard, the politics of the times were directly shaped by violence and people fought for what they believed to be true. The victory of Abraham Lincoln in the election was a threat to many slave owners in the south. This affirmed the need to have concerted efforts and ensure that people fought for what they believed was their political right (Rhodes).
