SAVE THE RECEIPT! You will not receive credit for the paper without a receipt! Make sure to staple the receipt to your paper.
Format: 3 pages, typed in Times 12 font, double-spaced, one-inch margins. The paper should include an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph. Please run spell check before you print your paper. I will not accept e-mailed papers.
No extensions are granted and late papers are marked down a half-grade each day (for instance: A to A- to B+, etc.). Papers more than one week late are not accepted and are graded as 0.
Your receipt, sketch and photograph of the work should also be stapled to the paper. I will not accept them later on.
STEP 1: Go to the Museum and pick an artwork to write about. The artwork can be a painting, sculpture, drawing, or fresco corresponding to the art historical periods we are covering in class: Renaissance (Italian and Northern), Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical (look through your textbook to get a sense of these art historical periods and dates) Before your trip, it is best to first look at metmuseum.org and plan out which galleries interest you the most. When you finally go to the museum, walk around your chosen galleries and see which works you are drawn to.
STEP 2: Pick a work. First, look at the work itself (don’t look at the wall label yet!). Make a sketch of the work (you will not be graded on your artistic ability, however, you will lose points if you do not include a sketch).Take detailed descriptive notes of the work as if you are describing it to someone who cannot see it. At least a page of your paper should be devoted to your description.
STEP 3: Now look at the wall label and note the artist’s name (if known), the title of the work, the date, art historical period, the medium, and the size or approximate size of the work. How does the content/subject of the work relate to the other works in the room?
STEP 4: Take a photograph of the work (do not use flash) which you will print and attach to your paper, (another option is to find the image online and include it with your paper).
STEP 5: Your paper should address the following:
a) Was this your first visit to an art museum? If yes, why have you never gone before? If not, which museums have you gone to, when have you gone, and what were your reasons for going?
b) What was your experience like at the museum? Was it easy to navigate the museum? How did the exterior of the building make you feel? Was it imposing, welcoming, inspiring, etc.? How did the interior of the museum make you feel? What were your favorite galleries and why? Is there a particular style of art or historical period which fascinates you?
c) What was it that made you choose this work of art specifically? Does it relate to you in any way, i.e., does it conjure up a memory, an image, an emotional response, an intellectual response, etc.?
What was your first impression of it? What mood does the artwork convey? How was your artwork displayed in relation to the other artworks in the room?
Give a full description using the notes you took while in front of the artwork, Remember, your description should be very thorough, as if you are describing it to someone who hasn’t seen the artwork.
d) What is the subject/meaning of the artwork? What was the original function of the art work? How is the work representative of the time period and culture it was created in? You can use both the wall label and the museum’s website to find out more about the work. While this is not a research paper, please indicate that the information is taken from the wall label or website. Also make sure to paraphrase the information, do not copy verbatim.
Were you surprised at the subject matter and other information given on the wall label once you read it? Did you guess correctly about what the work represented before reading the wall label (or looked at the museum website)?
Please do not write in an informal matter, this is a college level paper and should be treated as such. You might have a friend read over your paper before handing it in, or read the paper aloud to yourself to see if it sounds logical and grammatically correct.

Michele Taddeo di Giovanni Bono who is also known as Giambono, was an Italian painter. The works of Giambono are reflected in the international Gothic style with an Influence of Venetian. The international Gothic styles used elegant and graceful paintings. During this period, paintings used light and bright colors like gold. One of his best-known paintings is the Man of Sorrows (Metropolitan Mus). This is a painting that uses the theme of the New Testament Method. This painting is used as a precious object of devotion for the Franciscan friar. The Image of Christ on the cross is a representation of sacrifice, suffering, and resignation.
The Man of Sorrows is a painting that shows a small image of Saint Francis at the sideways of the picture, showing his grief over the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Burke, 2018). Jesus Christ is situated in an open tomb with a gash on his right side of his abdomen triggered by a weapon and wounds to his hands resulting from the torment. Even though Jesus Christ is considerable dead in this painting, there is vitality on his head that is moderately lowered and his outspreaded arms. There are streams of blood in the art, carved in profuse gesso, gush from the wounds etched into the panel (Kren, Burke, Campbell, Paul Getty Museum, & Royal Academy of Arts (Great Britain), 2018). In the painting, St Francis is seen accepting dishonor that come from the wounds of Jesus Christ. The depiction of Saint Francis's bleeding and praying shows the relationship between devotion, suffering, and the sacrifice of Christ.
This is an art that shows the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the suffering he went through. The painting shows a dead Jesus Christ who is standing straight in a casket that is set before a cross entrenched by three nails. In the picture, Christ is seen to have extended his hands to show his wounds and the blood. In his head, there is a crown of thorns that is extracted in relief. The focus of Christ in this painting denotes that he is probably meditating (Kondyli, Andriopoulou, Panou, & Cunningham, 2016). The picture of Saint Francis, who is receiving stigmata, becomes an alternate for the worshippers on this...
