In the “Portrait of Thomas Payne with his family and friends,” we see a gathering of literary figures and intellectuals. We see a seated gentleman wearing spectacles and holding cards.He is strategically positioned at the center of the painting; he is Thomas Payne. Around his table are three men also engaging in the same game of cards, known explicitly as "Whist," which was a widely played card game in the 1700s. Beside Thomas Payne’s table to the right is another table surrounded by four men, all who appear to be engaging in separatistic activities. Three are holding a conversation, whereas one is evidently conversing with the gentleman standing beside him. Behind Payne’s table are two ladies and a gentleman. From the looks of it, the two ladies are observing the card game being played by the gentlemen and the gentleman beside them intently gazes out the window. Behind the table beside Payne’s to the left are three ladies. It is unclear as to what they are specifically doing since each is facing a separate direction and there is no direct eye contact toward a particular place in the room.
Beside Payne’s table to the right are two seated ladies seemingly holding a conversation. They are the only seated ladies in the room. Next to her stands a dog playfully hovering over her leg. Behind the ladies stands a gentleman who seems to be listening in on the conversation. He is also the painter of this piece. All the gentlemen are elegantly dressed each wearing a buttoned-up ankle-length cloak. The ladies are all wearing large hats/headpieces which portray class.
