Nola on Assimilation, Accommodation, and resistance in Mean Spirit
In today's world, people display assimilation, accommodation, and resistance in different ways due to the complexity that exists in the society. Hogan puts forward a story that is an allegory to today's life since the Native Americans still believe that their culture has a great dependence on the natural world. Therefore, it is bound to be affected by issues such as greed, corruption, and obsession with material things. Hogan uses the character, Nola, to display the notions of assimilation, accommodation, and resistance.
One of the main ways through which Nola displays assimilation is the fact that despite her tender age, she can understand that being a witness to her mother's death puts her life at risk. Therefore, she decides to go and live with the Grayclouds so that they can offer her the protection that she needs. She also assimilated the syndicate of Mr. Will and his father that after marrying Nola, they would kill her so that they can possess her wealth. Therefore, Nola kills her husband and flees to the Hill Indian settlement where she gives birth. The death of her mother completely changed her personality, and this has played a major role as being the catalyst to her ability to assimilate things. Nola is also aware that marrying a white man is not part of her plans because, given the fact that she is very wealthy, then the motive of a white man marrying her would be for the sake of her wealth. That's why she decides to marry the son of Mr. Forrest who has been her guardian. However, she is still not secure about her life and goes ahead to kill Mr. Will. It is not clear from the novel that Mr. Will and his father were planning to murder Nola for her wealth. Hence, this is a challenge faced by the notion of assimilation because the information that an individual perceives and understands might always not be true. Thus, this can lead to a person committing a crime that would have been avoided given the fact that such assimilation did not occur.
Nola displays the notion of accommodation when she agrees to go and live with the Grayclouds after her mother was murdered. Since she was just a little girl and in fear of her life, it would have been difficult for her to trust anyone who offered their support because she didn't know why her mother was murdered at that time. The act of accommodation is also displayed in the scene whereby she kills her husband in fear that the father-in-law would kill her for her wealth (Hogan 1992). She is very considerate of her baby's life, and that could be a reason for her actions to protect the baby's future wealth.
