Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States is an iconic figure associated with not only the Civil war but also the Emancipation Proclamation and issues regarding to slavery (“The Roles of Lincoln” 4). Besides his responsibilities as president, he was also a father, and husband to Mary Todd Lincoln, who became his wife on 4th November, 1842 (Burlingame 506). Because of his state responsibilities, he was a busy man and this might have been the reason why they could communicate through letters. This essay will discuss the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and his wife based on “Mary Todd Lincoln to Abraham Lincoln”, dated 2 November 1862. It will also highlight the first Lady's role in the mid-19th century.
In her letter, dated 2 November 1862, their relationship as a couple is perceived as intimate. Her salutation indicates her passion and love for her husband. Mary passionately expresses how she missed her husband and hoped to receive at least letter confirming of her his wellbeing (1). Out of curiosity, she seems to have been constantly inquiring about her husband's condition because she writes that “Strangers come up from W- & tell me you are well-which satisfies me very much” (1). Likewise also, it can be said that both Lincoln and his wife were caring parents through her words,” dear little Taddie is well” (2). Likewise also, it can be claimed that they were welcoming and friendly in that, even in his absence, there are people like Lizzie Keckley, who care enough to safe her when she is in need.
In spite of her family roles as a mother and wife, Mary's letter indicate that in the 19th century, the first lady could advice the president regarding state appointments to federal offices. For instance, Mary Todd Lincoln advices the president to appoint a new fighting general, in pace of McClellan, who was by then, the serving general. She takes this stance in regard to people's sentiments, who perceived McClellan as slow and perhaps, an ineffective officer. Likewise also, first ladies were presidents' informants and campaigners. As first lady, Mary informed her husband that people backed him as their president. She notes that, “since I came up here many say, they would almost worship you…” (2). All these point out that; first ladies were involved in active politics because they aired people's sentiments to sitting presidents.
