VISUAL ANALYSIS PAPER OF GAROFALO'S "MADONNA AND CHILD IN GLORY"
Benvenuto Tisi da Garofalo is Italian and a renaissance painter, who changed his style from contemporary to the influential renaissance. Focusing more on those of the religious artwork, which was first inspired by Rafael during the making of the Sistine chapel. He is a famous painter from the Farrarese school, a public school of other artists known in history.
The name of the artwork by Garofalo is "Madonna and Child in Glory," which described the presence of a woman and a child being glorified by the winged beings or angels surrounding them. Madonna is an Italian word for "my lady," referring to a woman with a high ranking, or in other interpretations, a beautiful woman with virtue. This woman and child paintings and sculptures are familiar during the 14th to 16th century at the same time that religion is becoming the focus of the society (Gillet). The history of religion, in addition to the structure of the painting, adds more depth and emotion in comparison to other types of artwork, which is most likely one of the reasons why these were the era that they call "High Renaissance."
The renaissance period, specifically the high renaissance, is when the works of art were at its peak, making it world-famous until the present time. The history of the revival is not all good, although a lot of things have flourished in addition to the art. There was development in culture, various disciplines, and dance during this period. "Renaissance" means rebirth, which was describing life after the Middle Ages that experienced a significant decline in society. In the renaissance period, people became more creative and ventured into different disciplines, exploring what might have been unknown or missed in the previous ages. Aside from the apparent beauty of the artworks, it also became political due to the constant turmoil that the state is in, especially those who are included in the upper class. The paintings and other types of art were purchased as a symbol of wealth and power, emphasizing one's position in the high-class society (Hart, Frederick, and Wilkins).
In addition to the known progression in the picturesque view, famous values also emerged in this period, and these were humanism, individualism, secularism, materialism, naturalism, and many more. These ideas and values were given birth to because of the lessons that the people have learned from the Middle ages, which had completely different views in comparison to the beauty of those in the renaissance (Hart, Frederick, and Wilkins).
Religious artworks during the spread of Christianity were considered an essential part of the church, which later on became tradition even up to the present time (Lavin). These were devotional pieces to show belief and reverence towards God, Jesus, and Mary.
The art is seemingly divided into two as if it is two different paintings.
