Photography is not in any way a form of art since it does not reflect the visual world of the photographer, as in the case of arts such as paintings. Baudelaire argues that any form of art should represent the mental imagination of the artist, a phenomenon that is absent in photography. Art requires the individual’s mind to participate fully in creating images one sees in their mind (Baudelaire 86). As such, it requires one to have talent which they may or may not supplement with education. As Baudelaire points, photography is a field where failed artists with little talent or too lazy to finish their study seek solace (87). Photography cannot reproduce images that are a true reflection of nature and Baudelaire believed that its objects are naturally unappealing (Baudelaire 87). Photography lacks creativity, which is the precursor of any form of art.
Photography could be considered an art depending on the motive of the photographer. Julia Margret Cameron proved the photography critics wrong when she produced images that even surpassed painting works (Jay 1). This is because she had a profound ability to visualize and produce images that were an accurate reflection of the personalities she chose. Although her photographs lacked sharpness, they represented her emotional, spiritual and dreamy mood, which made them look more like artwork than just any other photograph. As a result of these traits, she was able to produce fancy portraits that were more or less the same as those created through paintings (Jay 1). In this regard, photography qualifies as artwork.
