It is the 1650s. As an old sage, you have been asked to predict which empire/civilization will come to dominate the globe in the next 300 years. Compare your top candidates and explain your choice.
As the Ottoman Empire expanded, the ruling class became richer including through plundering, but it is the social mechanisms that were crucial to rigid unity and discipline of the empire. The infantry corps (Janissariess) repelled the Christians and this would make them strong for the next three centuries from 1650. Even as Ottomans procured foreign slaves and mercenaries to work in the military functions they also served the Sultan a symbol of unity among the diverse communities (Blake). As some native Muslims joined higher ranks of the well-trained army, there was loss in military value over time, but the empire’s governed people were mainly Muslims even as they came from diverse ethnic backgrounds (Jackelsb). While the Europeans developed better weapons, the Ottoman Empire would most likely be resilient, because the Ottoman institutions were built to maintain order and unity in the empire.
The source of prosperity for the Ottomans was the victorious wars that were associated with territorial expansion, while technological revolution grew in Europe and challenged the empire’s position. However, as Ottomans occupied a large area spanning three continents, they were able to thrive overseeing a vast empire (Szczepanski). In any case, the Ottomans gradually gave up nomadism and became settled, and this made it easier to implement administrative structures when people were more settled. Nonetheless, the success of the Ottomans would also depend on the ability to deal with corrupt practices at a time when the bureaucratic structure would be costly to maintain.
While people lived side by side the semi autonomous communities were protected by the Sultan. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 was monumental as Islam was deeply entrenched in Asia Minor and the Ottomans expanded to southern Europe (Spielvogel 295). Mutual respect would still be a determining factor in how the people related with each other after 1650 as it would be possible to maintain peaceful coexistence so long as the governed accepted the status quo. The Ottoman Empire was like a federal state of nations or micro-states, whose existence depended on the laws and rules adopted by the Sultan and even pacts made between them. The Muslims were in a privileged position in the empire and this would continue for the next 300 years, but protection of the different people would still be respected.
