Aside from its pyramids, the country also boasts of some of the oldest sculptures, monuments, cities, and structures. Monuments which are believed to be millennia-old are found sparingly distributed in the country depicting the existence of the natives in the old and forgotten times. One of the most revered and historically relevant places in Egypt is Historic Cairo. Historic Cairo boasts of a rich history. However, as UNESCO notes, it was not until 1979 that “the site Historic Cairo was inscribed on the World Heritage List…recognizing its “absolutely unquestionable historical, archaeological and urban importance”.” Historic Cairo was founded in the 10th century and has managed to survive a millennium. It is not only one of the oldest Islamic cities but also represents man’s growth and rise from the old to the new. After it was founded, Historic Cairo gained prominence among the Muslim and by the 14th century, the city had already grown to become an esteemed center of Islam. Today, Historic Cairo is found in the Capital City of Egypt, Cairo. According to an article by Gary (2009), Cairo is unlike any other city in the world, and it is divided into several sections. “One of these sections is Historic Cairo, which is commonly referred to as Islamic Cairo” (Gary, 2009).
