Greatest President in American History
America is one country that has been under the leadership of many different presidents since its birth. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Barrack Obama, and John F. Kennedy are only a few amongst the 45 presidents that have led America to this end. While it is true that they all contributed in some way to the development or failure of America, there are all reasons to believe that Abraham Lincoln made the greatest contribution and thus is considered America’s greatest president. Born in 1809 in Larue County, Abraham Lincoln came from a humble background with both parents uneducated. The year 1832 saw Lincoln try his hand in politics but he was unsuccessful before being elected as a Whig to the lower house two years later. In 1836, Lincoln became a lawyer before being a House of Representatives member later for one term in 1847. He moved from one political position to another before finally running for presidency in 1861 and winning to become America’s 16th president. Fortunately or unfortunately, Lincoln’s rule was during the Civil War, which was the toughest time for America. Most of the great characteristics he is associated with came live during this time as he took America through the war. His stand on the civil war and the issue of slavery led to Lincoln being killed in the year 1865. Generally, Lincoln accomplished much in preserving the unity of the states during the Civil War, enacting the emancipation proclamation, and introducing the Homestead Act for the sake of the poor.
As the president of America during the toughest time, Abraham Lincoln had quite a number of accomplishments. His greatest accomplishment was ensuring the preservation of national unity during the civil war in the United States. As fate could have it, the war began exactly one month after Lincoln was elected into office as the president. Rather than sitting around and watching the country splitting into two, he used his wisdom and exemplary leadership skills to keep together. The Confederate States were trying to break away from the rest of the states in order to form a new separate country, but through Lincoln’s integrity, leadership, and compassion, he successfully managed to keep the nation as one (Brown, Np). Even though the pressure was high and many lives were lost in the war, Lincoln did not falter in his quest to defeat the confederacy and preserve the unity among the states.
