On 27 January 2017, the newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the administration issued a travel ban. The ban was meant to restrict accessibility to the US by citizens of eight countries that are predominantly Muslims. The ban barred the issuance of visas to individuals from the countries, namely: Libya, Iran, Syria, Chad, Somalia, Yemen also North Korea and Venezuela, citizens were to undergo tough screening for certain racial groups. Initially, the ban included Iraq and Sudan, but a consecutive revision of the ban saw the removal of the countriesCITATION Bar17 \l 1033 (Barrett). In this regard, the order halted any refugee admissions or visitors.
The ban faced criticism with several legal challenges as this move sparked protests. Trump’s order was termed as discriminatory based on racial basis and profiling of Muslim individuals as terrorists. The anti-terrorism feature of the Trump administration focused on anti-Muslim targets. The ban has undergone several reforms with the U.S. Supreme Court on 4th December 2017, ruling in favor of the Trump administration. The ruling enforced the execution of the immigration ban. However, the limitation to travel to the US was now in six middle east countries: Yemen, Iran, Syria, Libya, Somalia, and Chad, but the cases are still on CITATION Ada17 \l 1033 (Liptak).
Despite the provision of certain exemptions like relatives, I believe that a travel ban was a bad move made by the newly sworn-in president of the US. For long, US has been home to many nations and has been a leading example of providing homage to many refugees who mostly come from war-torn countries.
