1. Could slow food be the best choice for producing food for humanity?
Yes.
Slow Food mainly seeks to attain the goal of producing food that is good, clean, and fair. Additionally, it also seeks to continue feeding the world without necessarily harming the environment. Today, the number of people suffering from lifestyle diseases continues to rise and Slow Food could be the answer to such statistics. With people eating what their body needs, with reduced amount of chemicals, and with little to no cost to the environment, the goal of reducing the growing numbers of people with lifestyle diseases can be attained. Below are explanations of why slow food could be the best choice for producing food for humanity.
First of all, slow food promotes the production of food that is of good quality. This means that the food that people consume will have a higher nutrient quality that is naturally attained. Slow food promotes eating fruits and vegetables which contain vitamins, phytochemicals, and minerals. These are all part of antioxidants which are “nutrient and non-nutrient compounds that bind free radicals, which are produced by normal metabolism” (Ruhl, 5). Eating food that produced using organic methods mainly leads to produce with the right levels of antioxidants which Ruhl (5) says leads to “lower cholesterol and decrease risk for heart disease.” So, the results for eating good food is great health with the right levels of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals.
Secondly, the idea of slow food is built on the foundation of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture mainly considers practices like crop rotation. Additionally, the use of pesticides and fertilizers is limited to the natural kind which helps to protect the environment as will be shown later. Embracing organic agriculture impacts the nutrient factor or quality of the produce. When farmers protect the soil or farm environment through methods such as crop rotation, they leave room for the soil quality to improve. This means that nutrients in the soil remain at adequate levels and this impacts the nutrient quality of the produce as well.
Thirdly, slow food makes it easier for farmers to benefit from their produce. A majority of farmers who practice organic farming are small scale farmers who are part of local economies that often neglect them. Additionally, these farmers are usually at the mercy of the middlemen who dictate the prices even though they end up making a fortune out of the same produce. Buying local organic produce will, therefore, make it easier for farmers to sell their produce directly to clients. This not only eliminates middlemen but also leaves room for farmers to make more money and earn decent profits from their work.
Lastly, slow food can help to promote organic agriculture which also seeks to promote healthy use of the environment. When farmers focus on the quality of the soil as well as the quality of their yields, they will adopt practices that ensure the two are not impacted in any way. Soil erosion, the damage caused by inorganic fertilizers to the soil are but a few ways that conventional agriculture impacts the environment. So, in the end, whil...
