By and large, the background of an individual plays a critical role in influencing and determining what one becomes in the future. Particularly, the experiences one goes through during early childhood and other early stages of life shape the personality an individual as well as his or her perspective towards life. Similarly, life lessons learnt early in life, the cultural context, and social histories that make up the heritage of an individual comprise the foundation on which the life of an individual is anchored on and hence, they greatly influence and define the destiny of an individual (Franco). For that reason, it is imperative that everyone appreciate their past and its effects on their future endeavors. Therefore, as Jose Rizal, the national hero of Philippine, observes, “one who does not look back at where he or she came from will never get to his or her destination”.
Admittedly, failure to reflect on where one has come from is an indication of one’s unwillingness to learn from his or her past. Generally speaking, one’s journey through life is marked with ups and downs, events that can be critical in shaping the future of an individual. In most cases, these life events provide valuable lessons to individuals and hence, can be instrumental in averting unwanted turns and twists in the life of a person. Thus, by constantly reflecting on where one has come from, an individual can be able to discern important life lessons (Billings 26). Conversely, an individual who ignores his past in its entirety fails to appreciate precious life lessons and thus, he or she can hardly realize his goals in life.
Undoubtedly, looking back at where one has come from also facilitates self-understanding besides assisting one to reconcile conflicting identities throughout life.
