Woodrow Wilson’s

Fourteen Points

1918

The Fourteen Points speech was an address delivered by President Woodrow Wilson, before a joint meeting of Congress on January 8, 1918. In his speech, Wilson outlined his vision for a stable, long-lasting peace in Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world, following World War I.

#1) Please read the complete instructions FIRST!

#2) NEXT read the following background, BEFORE you read the document:

His proposal called for the victorious Allied Powers (United States, Britain, France and Russia) to agree to sympathetic peace terms with the defeated Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) of World War I. This included freedom of the seas, the restoration of territories that had been conquered during the war, and the right to national autonomy, or self-rule, in belligerent regions, such as the Balkans.

According to Wilson, the horrific carnage of World War I spelled out the need for a relationship between international stability, as well as American national security. He also wanted to appease the isolationists in the United States by proclaiming:

The world must “be made fit and safe to live in; and particularly that it be made safe for every peace-loving nation which, like our own, wishes to live its own life, determine its own institutions, be assured of justice and fair dealing by the other peoples of the world as against force and selfish aggression.”

Wilson detailed his “fourteen points,” that he felt would safeguard national security, as well as world peace. Some of the points dealt with territorial issues in Europe, but others sought to establish postwar American diplomacy, as well as the principles that became the mainstay of U.S. foreign policy, as the nation became a world power in the post-World War I era of the early 20th century.

#3) Read the document, it is attached to the Discussion Board #2 assignment, found in “Assignments” on our class home page.

#4) These are some questions to consider for your posts. Please, understand, it is not a requirement for you to answer all these questions. I prefer for students to make a relevant point or argument, based on their reactions to the document. But, if you need some direction, these are possible subjects:

1) Wilson’s stance and point of view differed from other leaders who had just defeated a country. Did he speak as a typical conqueror, or victor?

2) During the Paris Peace Conference, European leaders rejected many of Wilson’s Fourteen Points, and instead favored harsh treatment of Germany. Why do you think this happened, and was it the right thing to do?

3) The rejection of the Fourteen Points and the League of Nations by Congress shocked and saddened Wilson. Do you think this rejection was the right move, or the wrong move?

5) Post your main discussion. PLEASE, make a relevant point about what you have read, and your reactions to it. Your original reply should be at least four full paragraphs. Make some points or other arguments. It is perfectly fine to DISAGREE or have an adverse opinion.

VERY IMPORTANT, READ THIS!!! Please make your first post by Friday, 3-27-20.

If everyone waits until Monday for their original posts, there will be no posts for anyone to respond to.

Next, you will respond to two of your classmate’s posts. Do not simply agree with what they have said, give a response based on the knowledge you have gained from reading this excerpt; an EDUCATED reply? Your responses should be at least two full paragraphs each.

You have until Monday, 3-30-20, by midnight, to accomplish this.

LATE POSTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED!!

You have eight days to post your first post, and then three more days for your responses to other students. Don’t wait until the last minute, that is when catastrophes happen. If you miss your first post, go ahead and do the two responses, I will accept that. In that case the total possible points to be earned is only 10 points. So, don’t leave 15 points on the table by procrastinating!

#6) Grading-

15 points for your original post

5 each for both of your responses

Total points 25 points

Points will be taken off for unoriginality, or not making a valid point or argument. Again, simply agreeing with what you read is not a relevant post.

FIRST POST, due by midnight, Friday, 3-27-20

TWO RESPONSES, due by midnight on Monday, 3-30-20

25 total points!

First of all, I do agree with the author that Wilson took a more relaxed approach with the 14 points. In talking so highly about Russia, Wilson validated the country’s communist government that eventually ended up becoming a major threat to the United States. Even though Russia was part of the allied forces, Wilson ought to have steered clear of singing high praise for the country because this led to dissent at home. I agree with the author that the American citizens would not be too happy with what Wilson said about a country whose form of government ignores the precepts of democracy. However, I do believe that at the time, Wilson’s stance on Russia was necessary because the allied forces needed to showcase their power and support.
In the author’s second point, I would like to disagree with the notion that Wilson was being too forgiving to the Germans. I see Wilson’s move to declare freedom of sees for all nations was an attempt to ensure peace and avoid instances of conflict. Moving forward, the world needed every country to be on the same page and such a move would have made the aversion of danger possible. Harsh treatment for Germany would have compounded the reasons for the outbreak of another fight like it did eventually. Finally, I agree with the author’s last po...
