History of British Colonization in India
The history of British colonization in India dates back to 1820 when East India Company, a British joint-stock company, started trading in the Indian Ocean Region. The company later expanded its operation territory and changed its name depending on the territory it was operating in. By the end of 1830, the company had seized control of many parts of India, Southeast Asia and colonized Hong Kong. Having taken control of major regions, its leadership was transferred to the crown in the person of Queen Victoria. India was then taken over and partitioned into provinces with some opting to remain independent but with a direct control of the queen. The princely states that were under control of the British slowly started taking over the other provinces by appointing British governors to lead them. One notable rule that was introduced by the British was the doctrine of lapse, which was perpetrated by Lord Dalhouse. The rule had it that any Hindu leader who had no heir was not allowed to adopt someone who could inherit the throne (Encyclopedia Britannica).
