The Depiction of Russia in Popular Culture
Films are very important in popular culture in depicting events and giving people some perspective of what happened in the past. The Russian culture and the cold war between the Soviet Union and the US is a common topic in movies. In most cases, the movies are usually biased to favor the origin country of the movie. Therefore, if the movie is American, the topics in history are usually covered from the American perspective, and they may fail to capture the reality of the events from Russia's viewpoint. An example of a loosely based film on Russia's history and its participation in the Cold war is "Bridge of Spies."
"Bridge of Spies" is about the Lawyer of a Russian Spy called Rudolf Ivanovich Abel, who was arrested in the US in 1957. James B. Donovan was an insurance lawyer when appointed as the official legal counsel to Rudolf Ivanovich CITATION Han15 \l 1033 (Spielberg). The film details how the Lawyer fiercely defended the Russian spy despite pressure from the CIA and FBI for him to become unethical and break his client's confidentiality. According to the film, in 1960, an American pilot who was doing surveillance for the CIA was shot down and arrested. Therefore, the two countries agreed to do a prisoner swap at the Glienicke Bridge. The film, therefore, focuses on the Lawyer rather than the two prisoners.
The film depicts Russia as an aggressive country historically involved in a long conflict with the United States. The film depicts the former USSR as a paranoid state that sent spies into the US to collect intelligence for Cold War purposes.
