Was China a capitalist society before the Mongol invasion?
First, you need to define “capitalist society.” Do your own research on this concept. You can look it up on Wikipedia, if you like, but you should be able to find more authoritative sources, such as guides to social scientific terminology. A link to one possible source is posted on UBLearns.
In the beginning of your reading report, state your definition of capitalism or capitalist society and cite your sources for this definition. Then use evidence from the readings (and lectures) to answer the question above. As with many historical questions, there is no right answer. But there are better and worse arguments in support of the possible answers. Try to make the best argument you can and cite your evidence.
Your paper should be around 700 words, formatted with double spacing and one-inch margins.
You should include a bibliography that lists your sources (does not count for the 700 words). When citing information, use parentheses with author and page number, as in the example below. Each work you cite should be included in the bibliography.
Example of in-text citation style:
During the Tang dynasty, the Chinese state tried to stabilize rice prices by setting up the “ever-normal granary” system (Murphey, 144-145).
You will use your report to contribute to our class discussion of this question on September 18 and hand it in at the end of class that day.

Was China a Capitalist Society Before the Mongol Invasion?
Capitalism is commonly used to describe the social system of the majority of the world’s population. There is an assumption by historians that capitalism has existed, if not forever, then for most of human history. However, other studies assert that capitalism is a somewhat new social disposition (World Socialist Movement).
Capitalism is a social structure, which exists in almost all countries in the world. In this type of social structure, a small minority of the population owns the main elements of production and distribution, including land, factories, technology, and the transport system. In a capitalist society, the majority of the population, referred to as the working class, sells their human resource in return for wages from the small minority, who are known as the capitalist class.
The working class works in factories and industries owned by the capitalist class, where they produce goods that are in turn sold for profit. The capitalist class earns profits because they make more money selling the manufactured products as compared to the costs they invest. In this way, the capitalists exploit the working class. Additionally, the capitalists live off the proceeds generated by the working class, while ploughing back some of their profits for the continued buildup of their wealth (World Socialist Movement). Consequently, this leads to the class division, which is the central feature of capitalism. In a capitalist society, the primary purpose of producing goods for sale in to make profits as opposed to satisfying the needs of people. There is an assumption that capitalism is based on the free market economic policy. However, it is possible to have a free market economy that is not based on capitalism. Such societal structures exist in countries like China (World Socialist Movement).
