John Hughes was an Irish-born and strong believer in the Roman Catholic Church. Hughes advocated seriously against the protestant attack on his religion. During the time Hughes was in the priesthood, debates arose of whether Catholicism was amicable to the American political ideologies. Hughes (2008) And so they were an exponent of the idea to deport Irish immigrants. So many Catholics acknowledged the proposal of Hughes that institutions were anti-catholic and were impermissible to the Irish. So, Hughes came up with an appeal to revert some of the teachings in common schools that did not promote the Catholic rules, and he wanted Catholics to be given their platform to have their schools.
First and foremost, Hughes did not like the idea of using the King James Version in the public school by the society governing these schools. He attested that the teaching of children to use this version of the bible was against all that Catholic stand for, and it was a strike towards his people. Hughes had towards this because he felt it oppressed the Catholic people, for they had to pay taxes twice to the public schools and their parochial schools. His implore yielded to nothing.
This employs me to my next argument of Hughes. He did not despair. He founded the independent Catholic schools, the ones that are referred to as Parochial schools. This did not come easy. He pleaded for public funds to be donated to assist in the building of these independent schools. Hassard (2008) was granted later after various sittings and addressing the situation when they feel they are being mistreated. The state gave them the funds, and these Independent Catholic schools were built.
The Irish people believed in their conviction. So, Hughes and the entire diocese of Catholic and parents too gathered for a meeting to discuss whether the Catholic children were at risk of discerning their faiths because of their schools. For good judgment, Hughes had looked at the books that their children are being taught by in those schools, and his argument was they appeared to be free of displeasing content. But he later learned that some textbooks were hidden from them, which had disturbing teachings. Hughes felt like this was a political move. And he advised the parents to take responsibility to remind their children of the proper moral values of Catholicism. But you know, one way to show how these were not politically staged was how the Catholic leaders managed to agree unanimously on the way forward.
History is an exciting prospect in the learning of people. Specific issues were experienced a long time ago, like one the immigration of the Irish People to the United States.
