City upon a Hill [2016] A History of American Exceptionalism
American exceptionalism is linked way back to the image of a city on a hill as early as 1630, as stated by John Winthrop where the people of Arbella and New England reflected a model of God’s country in the region and U.S. as a whole. The city on a hill also emphasized that the U.S. was the best model for the rest of the world to follow. If the eyes of the people were upon the US the God had favored the country and the U.S. would remain strong in the face of enemies.
The idea of American exceptionalism still means that Americans are unique compared to other nations and even superior. In the 18th century there was support for a small republic that was wealthy and favored by God and Christianity was central to the identity. In the 20th century exceptionalism was associated with military might and America’s ability to make the world safer for democracy, and especially after WWII.
