Monitoring of the Environment in Responding to A Fire Incident
Caban-Martinez, Alberto J., et al. "The “Warm Zone” Cases: Environmental Monitoring
Immediately Outside the Fire Incident Response Arena by Firefighters." Safety and Health at Work (2017).
In the course of an incident of fire, emergency response teams and firefighters are exposed to different hazardous conditions in the atmosphere around and in the fire scene. The national association for fire protection provides requirements and procedures that the first responders should adhere to. They include, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other equipment for protecting them against respiratory disruption. The aim of using the equipment is to enable the reduction of exposure to the gasses that are harmful and the particulates resulting from the fire. The possibility of the first responders getting carcinogenic exposure is high and it is essential that they follow the standards provided.
Work zones that are hazardous are established in the process of the hazard calls. The fire zone is categorized into hot, warm and cold zones. The hot zone also referred to as the exclusion zone, and includes a region where immediate and direct individuals that have been exposed had their lives and health threatened. The firefighters that go to the hot zone regions are required to use protective gear for their protection. The cold zone is the region that is considered safe and that is where the operations command sets up the base.
