Assignment #3 involves an evaluation of the book “Finding Hope in a Hungry World” by Howard Buffet.

Motivation for the assignment:
The Howard Buffet book offers a view of the challenges in combating hunger and malnutrition. Before you start writing:
• Read the book. Really! You can take notes along the way of course. Read the book with this question in mind: If you had $3 billion, how would you use it to reduce hunger and malnutrition in the world?
• Re-read chapters 19, 20, 24 and 37 of the Buffet book before you start writing.
Guidelines for your written assignment: (maximum three pages, 11 or 12 pt font).
The assignment covers three parts:
1. In his book, Howard Buffet discusses many issues related to his fight against hunger. Identify ¬one issue that you find particularly compelling. Discuss this issue and argue why you find it compelling. (at most 1 page).
2. In chapter 20, Howard Buffet argues that the “Green Revolution” was “a great contribution but not a solution”. Do you agree? Why or why not? Discuss. (at most 1 page).
3. In chapter 37, Howard Buffet mentions the WEB site “Map the Meal Gap”: https://www(dot)feedingamerica(dot)org/research/map-the-meal-gap . Use this WEB site to describe the extent of food insecurity in the US. How does food insecurity vary across US states? How does it vary across Wisconsin counties? Discuss the factors contributing to food insecurity and the options to help reduce hunger in the US. (at most 1 page, excluding tables and figures).
Your report must do the following:
• Present the arguments clearly,
• Relate your arguments about hunger and malnutrition issues to those presented in the Howard Buffet book,
• Relate these issues to the course material,
• Discuss the factors contributing to malnutrition,
• Discuss the implications for socio-economic changes and policy interventions.
Submit your assignment in a 11 or 12-point font, typed report (it can be single spaced). The report must be a minimum of two-page long and a maximum of three-page long, excluding tables, figures and references.
At the top of the first page, write your name, student ID number, and TA’s name.

Part One
Howard Buffet is not only a farmer and philanthropist but also an individual who is enthusiastic on assisting poor people fight against hunger. In his book Finding Hope in a Hungry World, he details stories of hungry people around the globe and individuals and organizations that have been at the forefront of helping those affected cope with the hunger crisis. He notes that despite consultative efforts and resources directed towards addressing global poverty and hunger issues, they still persist stubbornly not only in developing and under-developed nations but also developed countries such as the US. Buffet shares that some of the significant obstacles in that regard include armed conflict, cultural practices and corrupt governments. Nonetheless, Buffet categorically states that he believes that efforts in addressing global concerns have proven futile primarily because the approaches employed and individuals are often inadequate and counter-productive. According to Buffet, “The fact is that most of the aid flowing to the poorest parts of the world has been (and continues to be) in the form of projects that are meant to help people in the short-term” (32). The above statement points to the fact that the assistance provided is usually not sustainable. I also find the above sentiment echoed by Buffet very compelling and a strong reason to explain why hunger remains a global crisis. The majority of humanitarian individuals and organizations tend to offer food items and other essentials that last for a short while. For instance, it is common for humanitarian organizations such as the World Food Program (WFP) providing those affected with fertilizer and seedlings that will be used in one season. While the solution will feed the population for some time, it is not sustainable and does address the root causes of the problems the people face.
Part Two
