Crucial conversation is a book authored by Kerry Patterson to focus on the techniques of the ways of holding vital conversations within a positive space at a time that an individual is surrounded by extremely charged emotions (Patterson, 6). Kerry Patterson’s suggestions would be helpful in various ways as I would utilize them in class, being a high school English teacher.
The book “Crucial conversations” is very helpful in high school English class a great deal because it’s all about dialogue. The book enlightens about the importance of open dialogue in emotional, high stakes as well as risky topics or at the entire levels. It also emphasizes that learning how to talk as well as being heard is crucial even heartening others to do likewise. This is an important key even in English studies because it is through conversation that the students learn. In addition, English language requires more conversation to foster higher understanding, where teacher and students interact when sharing ideas and concepts. Both parties need to be enthusiastic about conversing towards hitting the same goal which is to learn. Through conversation, it becomes easy to start surfacing the best ideas, while making decisions of the highest quality and later act on the personal decisions with commitment and unity (Patterson, 12). The suggestion by Patterson of staying in dialogue in order to keep track of the critical conversation is very applicable in English class. The author says that, in case the lines for communication reduce, there would be a difficulty in finding a resolution.
A teacher is able to identify the student’s level of understanding of grammar and other topics of English through a lot of dialogue. The skill of making the conversation safe will help my students to engage in the English conversational sessions freely. Regardless of any errors made during a conversation, it would be a personal duty to encourage the students and assure them of improving in future. This would be a tactical way of enabling students to carry on with the conversation instead of closing down after feeling intimidated or fearful. In case there is any mistake done to foster closing down of many or one student, it would be easy to identify and re-trace the steps required to restore conversation. This can be sensed by the teacher when the students star masking tendencies, for instance, pretending to be agreeing or listening to the conversation. The close down can also happen through avoidance, where distraction techniques are applied as well as withdrawal. Such signs would be easy to note especially after having the knowledge of identifying them (Patterson, 10). However, it is always important to remember that the most important thing is the final outcome.
