The transformation of Racism
According to a news article by Tom Jacobs published in the Pacific Standard entitled “Americans Are Becoming Less Racist and Homophobic, According to New Research,” recent research established that conscious and unconscious bias against race had reduced significantly between 2007 and 2016. Jacobs attributes this changes generational transformation of the society, where the younger generation had become less concerned about racial differences. The research predicts that the American society will continue to be racially biased as the older generation continues to die off. These assertions are largely flawed as the study overlooks several aspects that define racism. The truth is that racism has not reduced but has only transformed and mutated into different forms.
Contrary to what many people believe or have been advised to believe, racism remains a deeply entrenched culture in modern society. In the past, the practice was more direct, where the African-Americans, who were the main victims of the practice as slaves, were subjected to open harassment. Fredrick Douglass presents this experience in the best way through his book entitled “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.” In this book, Douglass narrates about the mistreatment that he faced as a slave in the house of his master. Slaves were barred from education as their masters believed that education would enlighten them and set them free. Douglas was barred from accessing anything that would enlighten him (Douglass). He was not supposed to be seen even with the newspaper and confirmed that education and slavery were incompatible. While racism has not been open in the modern society, it is still practiced through segregation. African-Americans and other minority groups have access to education, but this education has been limited in different ways. Most of their educational centers lack sufficient learning materials and the scramble for the few resources makes it difficult for effective learning.
As civil rights groups fight against segregation as a form of racism, the practice has transformed into different, more abstract forms. Schools of African-Americans continue to be upgraded with various learning resources to facilitate learning. While the effort is meant to free the victims of racism from the oppressors, they are denied the opportunities that should accord them the necessary platform to exercise their freedom. Alton Fitzgerald White, in the narrative entitled “Right Place, Wrong Face,” confirms the presence of higher forces that debunk the myth working hard is the key to success. The author was raised under the precept that success is based on working hard, being a good person, and always telling the truth. However, he learnt the hard way about the unseen forces that control his destiny and hence the society. He was harassed by the people he least expected and who were supposed to protect him.
