Michael Pollan’s Escape from the western diet and Rachel Laudan’s In praise of fast food highlight the case against and for western diets. Consumers, business, farmers, nutritionists and governments are all interested in food production and what people consume. There has been growing interest in eating and living healthy. Choices affect health outcomes, but the western diets are now mostly processed and these are the cheapest compared to unprocessed and fresh food options. Laudan (11) argues that the industrial food system has played an important role in food production, yet the focus on past foods that were unprocessed and fresh, ignores that it is mostly the poor and uncivilized who ate the fresh and natural foods. The topic is important as sources of food affect health, and I support Pollan’s view that people ought to be health conscious as western diets are unhealthy options.
