Part A
Being able to speak more than one language can enrich the life of an individual. Since a very young age, I always had interest in learning another language and I chose Chinese. In the U.S, Chinese is the second most spoken non-English language after Spanish (Palmer et al. 44). Before embarking on this journey, I never knew what to expect. Importantly, I never really knew how the new language would affect my life. Language touches on the lives of all people regardless of their race or where in the world they are located. This skill has enabled me to embrace the importance of communication. Most importantly, I have been able to communicate with my Chinese speaking friends well.
When people travel, they might never be able to communicate will all they come into contact with. With my ability to communicate in English and Chinese, I have been able to get along with the new people I meet by being able to communicate with them. With the increasing globalization, there needs to be able to communicate several languages has become ever so important. It is not easy to muster two languages and be fluent at them. My native language is English but over the years, I have been able to speak as fluently as a good learner can be. My friends have often told me that I speak Mandarin Chinese like a native. Whenever I speak Chinese with the locals, strangers often confuse me for having lived there all my life. In truth, I put great effort in my quest to better my Chinese. The Chinese culture has always intrigued me and I did hope that by understanding the language, I would be able to know more about the culture.
I was encouraged to take Chinese to increase my creativity. Besides, it has enabled me to be more tolerant towards other cultures and appreciate the differences in people. Someone who has not had an opportunity to learn other languages would not be tolerant to people that are different from them. I have many Chinese friends and being able to communicate with them has enabled us to have deep connections. I have increased the number of my friends who speak Chinese.
Anyone who has ever tried speaking in Chinese can confirm that it is not an easy language to learn. In fact, most people find the language strange and many people often wonder how I managed to do it. I believe that nothing is impossible if you put all your effort into what you do. I have not come across many people who are originally English speakers and can speak fluent Chinese. It takes a person of strong to be able to undergo the long hours of learning. Today, I can go visit any place in China and I would fit in with the locals.
Part B
What comes to your mind when you hear someone speaking in Chinese? I believe some of you must have found it strange while others might have found it enjoyable. I believe not many of you have come across a person that can speak both English and Chinese fluently. Well, I have the distinction of being able to do that.
