Why do Many Women Prefer to Work than to Stay at Home?
Mother’s resounding voice echoes through the household: "Children, husband, it’s time for breakfast!" This is the first picture that comes to mind when one talks about a stay at home moms – women who takes care of all the needs of the household from early in the morning until late at night. She fixes breakfast, does the laundry, picks up the groceries, and cooks the food while dad pays for all the bills. The life of the family is organized because mom is there to facilitate everything. In recent years, however, family life has become much more chaotic as mom has decided that she, too, wants to work. Or perhaps, she is forced to work to help dad sustain the family income. Whatever the reason for mom working, one knows it has affected the family’s rhythm. Children come to school late, with no breakfast. Dad sometimes has to go to work with his tie un-ironed. Sometimes they will come home to no dinner because mom has a deadline to meet at the office. When she comes home, she still has to wash the dishes before she can go to sleep. It is a tiring job, to be a career mom, because she has two shoes to fill. Sometimes, she is able to manage it, but there are many instances when the pressure from both sides is just too great. But still, she decides that she has to make it happen because both her family and her job gives her a sense of purpose. That’s it. That is perhaps the number one reason why women decide they want to work outside of the home – their careers give them a sense of fulfillment that raising a family couldn’t.
Modern life has changed so many things. First of all, girls are now expected to complete school and to find a job to sustain their personal needs. When they decide to get married, they are no longer expected to just stay at home. In fact, one can say that the high cost of living "prevents" the woman from just staying at home – she has to go out and find a job so she can help her husband pay the bills. If only the husband works, he will have to work double shifts if he wants to send his children to college. But then, it also means that he won’t have time to be with his family. And so the woman has to step up and share the burden so that the family can still have quality time together.
