WHAT HAPPENED ON TWENTY-THIRD STREET
As the title suggests, the scene took place on 23rd Street, New York City, in front of one of the country's most prominent newspaper offices. And just along the street is a hot air duct passing out large volumes of air forced by a blower. It is a film produced by pioneering motion picture director of Thomas Edison's production company, Edwin S. Porter. The brief scene running approximately under two minutes depicts New York street's real-life situation in 1901.
For the better start of the film, its presentation naturally conforms to Zavattini's neorealism doctrines of cinema production, which dwells on life's reality. It begins as real-life footage or one of the actualities that were popular in the initial years of cinema production. From a distance, we notice a man persistently watching the camera, while others naturally walk along the street minding their own business, unaware of the camera. Neorealism dictates the actual presentation of a real-life situation without fictitious actors to represent protagonists in a story. Zavattini believes that the people represented in film production need to play their parts, and directors should not recreate characters who try to bring perfection in a real-life phenomenon. Therefore, neorealism breaks all the American-style cinema rules, rejecting all those principles, which only exist to collate real-life limitations. It paints a reality, which the camera's lens can only capture as it unfolds in real-time.
In the scene, the camera view is set up strategically to capture the illustrious stretch of the twenty-third street. The sidewalk is abuzz with activities, with a steady flow of street traffic, and the camera is capturing surrounding aesthetic buildings. From the sidewalk's edge, we recognize a busy street while people are crossing in all directions. Several horse-drawn vehicles and electric streetcars portray the time's technological advancement, but no motorized vehicles present.
