The Negative Effects of Facebook
While the internet boasts of many benefits to the society, there are some of its effects that have taken the same society it is helping to its downfall. There numerous studies, literature, and text on the negative influence of the internet in general. The deleterious impact and influence of the internet are huge and as technology continues to grow and develop the more these impacts and effects continue to increase too. The internet has been accused of causing social anxiety, depression, sadness and sometimes death/ suicide. The effect is common in teens and the millennials are more likely to become addicts if internet usage is not controlled. Through his article "is the Onslaught making us crazy," Tony Dokoupil discusses the effects of the internet and mental health. Based on the above article and other empirical researches, the following text is going to discuss and analyze the effects of the internet by adding more insights into the already existing evidence of negative impacts of Facebook.
There exist and new solid research is emerging in regards to the effects of Facebook to the users and the community at large. A while back the negative effects seemed to be that detrimental and lacked enough evidence on what actually causes these impacts but today more concrete evidence has continued to emerge and the situation is not as simple as people thought it was as some factors have led the users to suffer from mental health issues. Depression and some to the extent of committing suicide. the internet today has many features and considering the phenomenon as portable, means individuals can carry it with them everywhere. This factor is what has contributed to the popularity of Facebook since one can literally login into their user account anywhere and at any time. This has resulted in a society of dumber, lonely, depressed, anxious, attention deficit disorder or in some worst-case psychotic individuals.
Facebook has over 350 million users and this number continues to increase, as the platform is one of the popular social media networking sites in the world. It is positive impacts include connecting individuals with their loved ones and family and has been an active tool for those conducting E-business. The use of Facebook has however raised concerned over the years. Parents all over the world are concerned over the use of Facebook as children continue to display negative psychological effects brought on this usage. The following are some of the negative effects associated with Facebook:
Time wastage: since it is addictive, users will tend to overdo it and forego or procrastinate on other activities to spend time online. The effect is too deep in the millennials that if one is not on social media they are viewed as backward and lacking in knowledge. Anything that takes too much of anyone's time impacts one's life. Facebook users will tend to spend too much time browsing and chatting instead of doing what they are meant to do, they are usually unable to keep up with their schedules
