To complete this writing prompt, follow these steps:
1. Make a list of topics to discuss with the author, especially those closely related to her short, non-fiction pieces that we have read in class.
2. Write down a list of questions that you want to ask Jamaica Kincaid. You are expected to write at least 10 questions + their answers.
3. Use an Internet search engine, like Google, to locate her contact information, information about her current job, literary work etc. This will help you ask more meaningful questions.

Interviewer: Ms. Kincaid in the stories “Biography of a Dress” and “Girl”, you seem to write of experiences as the narrator, are these experiences all true?
Kincaid: If you notice the main characters are young girls, and their experiences mirror mine in some ways, but I also change some details. My experiences in Antigua shaped me, so I can say they are autobiographical and fictional at the same time.
Interviewer: In the “ Biography of a Dress” story you focus on your mother’s insistence on making a Yellow dress with smocking so as to take a photograph. What is your understanding about the social and cultural world of the Caribbean when you were young, and has changed now?
Kincaid: Family relations are a big thing in the Caribbean, but the issues of colonialism cannot be overlooked when seeking to understand the cultural identity of the Caribbean people. For me, looking at the photo of me in a yellow dress represents my mother’s choice of the dress to conform and represent British-ness.
Interviewer: In Anglophone Caribbean literature how does western education influence the choice of subjects and how authors tackle different topics?
Kincaid: In the past there was focus on assimilating and linking with the metropolitan culture in Britain, partly because there were few opportunities in the Caribbean and writers learned in British colonial schools.
Interview: How does your experience and that of their English-speaking Caribbean migrants to the US influence migrant and diasporic literature?
Kincaid: Well there is an attempt to focus on life and experiences on the islands of origin and life in the US including the big cities, and attempt to address both the past and the present.
Interview: How does the migratory knowledge influence how you choose the narrator, their stories and interaction in a new world?
