Funeral Polka by Nic Labriola
In Funeral Polka, the main conflict is how to bury the dead body of a mother who passed away days ago. Unfortunately, the father has no money, and he feels guilty about that. The son, on the other hand, does everything to please his father and helps him get out of his uncertain situation. Meanwhile, the son feels that he has left behind a lot of things, like his freedom, luxurious lifestyle and a couple of friends, just to be with his father in his moments of sorrow. The conflict is presented to the readers impressively and uniquely. The writer shares a lot of incidents of his life, such as how his mother used to clean the house, to make things clearer and interesting. This story teaches us that we should value humans when they are alive, with us, because appreciating them after their death makes no sense (Labriola).
In the end, the son sees his mother’s dead body lying in bed, surrounded by beautiful flowers and lots of appealing things, and he and his father bring it to the car and travel the graveyard where they decide to bury her. But throughout the story, there are times when the boy feels hopeless and thinks that he will lose his father in the same way he lost his mother. His dad is an addict, and he cannot live even for a second without his champion. Sometimes, it becomes difficult for the young man to clarify his point of view to his father as he remains “drunk all the time” (Labriola 1). Plus, after the death of the mother, the father has become sensitive and begins crying all of a sudden (Labriola).
I strongly believe that their lives could be better if the father had fulfilled his responsibilities toward his wife and the son. He used to ignore the wife, but she still managed to survive in the same house just for the sake of her son. When the boy came back home, he could see that “the dishes were clean, the floor...
