Thesis: I will specifically be arguing for why controversial speakers should be allowed to speak on college campuses in order to make students feel uncomfortable not unsafe.
Point: Students can grow when they are uncomfotable however the line is crissed when they are unsafe.

Should Controversial Speakers be allowed to Speak on College Campuses?
The controversy surrounding whether or not colleges and universities should allow controversial guest speakers on campus is not something new. Individuals have debated about the tensions arising between upholding free speech and maintaining equality. It is critical to appreciate that a majority of college students in American attend public schools that are funded by the government, hence, the First Amendment is mandatory in particular institutions. However, the invitation of controversial speakers has often led to protests from a section of students. Some have found some of the remarks from these speakers offensive. This has intensified calls to prevent such speakers from passing their views across campuses. Despite these calls, I believe that controversial speakers should be allowed to speak on campuses so that they can make the learners uncomfortable, not safe.
They say that inviting controversial speakers is costly to the institutions. In this case, the term “cost” means a wide range of potential costs that arise from the diminishing of the participation of the learners. Supporters of this argument believe that controversial speakers may lead to a section of students to feel wrongly targeted (Ross). As a result, such students may not participate fully in the learning process. Additionally, the proponents also argue that institutions spend money on enhancing the reputation of such speakers. Hence, the money could be used in other productive activities that enhance inclusivity in the institutions. At the same time, some people feel that hateful speech should not be allowed in institutions of higher learning. Colleges and universities being places where diverse students meet, it is argued that these institutions should be at the forefront of promoting tolerance.
But against this I say, colleges and institutions should be on the fore-front to protect the freedom of speech and expression. Students need to understand the critical role speech has played in the advancement of rights and equality in the U.S. for example, we would not be having the Nineteenth Amendment, which allowed women to vote. Without women’s suffrage movement and the widespread demonstrations, it would have been impossible for women to enjoy this right today. This demonstrates the need to allow different perspectives for the advancement of society.
They may object that while institutions have the duty to uphold the freedom of speech and expression, hate speech causes more harm. They may cite recent demonstrations where students have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with particular controversial speakers.
