Research and Writing/Researching Writing Topics

Length: 1500-1800 words (double spaced, Times New Roman font, 12-point, default margins)

Sources: A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 sources. All sources must be credible.  At least five must be academic sources, which includes journal articles, book chapters, or government data.  Please use the King’s library website for research.

Format:  Please adhere to the most recent APA or MLA format for in-text citations and Works Cited or References page. Take a look at the sample papers for your chosen style in TLSH for comparison.

Process:

  1. First, try to figure out your personal connection to the topics.  You may wish to do brainstorming, clustering, or free-writing to develop your ideas.
  2. Conduct the research and develop an outline for your essay that shows the plan you will take or have taken for each paragraph.  Your thesis must be clearly outlined. Please hand in the outline with the first draft.
  3. During the writing process, please visit King’s University College’s Write Place for feedback.
  4. Please hand in the first draft as BOTH A HARD COPY AND ELECTRONIC COPY via the assignments tab on OWL.  For the peer review/response session, you will need two hard copies.  With the hard copy, please hand in one copy of the outline to me.
  5. Your final draft is due in the last class.  Please hand in the first draft with my feedback, A HARD COPY AND ELECTRONIC COPY via OWL.

Choose one of the topics below and refine it, narrowing it through personal interest and research. The final paper needs to include both reflection and research. Your paper must include at least five academic sources using either APA or MLA citation style.

  1. Writing Process Analysis.

Investigate some aspect of writing process by comparing published research on it to your own experience. You can look at the writing process as a whole, or select one or two or three aspects of it to explore. It’s up to you. This exercise asks you to explore your assumptions about writing, assumptions you may not even realize you have, and make writing strange to yourself.  Look at writing in new ways and open new questions about how writing works (or doesn’t work). Studying process will help you examine your own process and vice versa. Using both academic library resources (secondary sources) and your own experience (primary source) will give you a new perspective. How do your experiences compare to the research? How does examining your writing in the context of other people’s work illuminate or make strange your process? What did you learn?

  1. “Good Writing” Analysis

What counts as good writing, and what makes writing “good,” in the fields of study you’re engage in? You can pick one field and do your own investigation, or you can choose to collaborate with one or two other students to broaden your study. Again, you’ll use both primary and secondary research in terms of your own experiences and academic articles on writing in the disciplines. You might draw from previous assignments in your undergraduate writing, but also look to the academic writing published in your field and the academic articles published by writing scholars on the writing in that field! You might start by looking at Swales’ article, not just the summary. What are the criteria for “good writing”? Why? And what evidence can you find to back up your assertions?

  1. In the beginning there was the word analysis

Start with a term from one of the class readings about writing (yes, it has to be a writing term). Investigate it, discover its roots and follow up by reading and analyzing how 2-3 different academics have used the term as a lens or tool in their academic articles. How might the term help you understand your own writing or see your writing differently?

  1. The Medium is the Message?

Email, online journals, teaching blogs, owl sites: how has a digital world changed writing in your discipline/field of study? This topic is very similar to #2, but it asks you to consider particular ways of disseminating writing and its impact.
