The Sniper
The Sniper is a short story that Liam O’Flaherty wrote, in the wake of the Irish conflict. The setting of the story is Dublin, which is in the Republic of Eire. The story describes in detail the theme of violence. The Irish conflict was a result of the establishment of the Irish Free State, which gained independence from Britain; however, many people were not happy. In particular, the Irish Republicans did not like the independence; thus, they perpetuated the conflict. As such, there are several facilitators of the Irish conflict, which the story reveals. The main facilitator, however, was the conflict between the Irish Free State and the Irish Republicans. This is the main reason as to why there is violence in modern Ireland. Apparently, there were continuous conflicts, which emerged due to disagreements about the British withdrawal and the unification of Ireland.
The Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), which was the main paramilitary organization in Ireland, advocated British withdrawal and Irish unification. Thus, PIRA split to form IRA. On the other hand, the remaining republican paramilitaries disagreed with the IRA; hence, they resolved to use war as the means to resolve their differences.
