Do you think Montresor succeeded in leading Fortunato to the niche without raising his suspicions?
Montresor sought revenge against Fortunato, and to achieve this he tried to trick Fortunato that he would taste Amontillado a form of wine that was similar to sherry. Montresor knew his “friend’s/ enemy’s” weakness in drinking too much wine. He begins by telling Fortunato that he would show him the wine and if Fortunato were not interested then Luchesi, who was also like a wine connoisseur would taste the wine. Fortunato did not want Luchesi to taste the wine first and he blindly followed Montresor. As such, Montresor lured Fortunato into the niche with the promise that he would be the first to taste the wine and Fortunato was never a man to let such an opportunity to pass by.
