Week 6 Intrstuctor's note: Precarity, possibilities and Migrant Futures
Hi all,
Kudos on reaching Week 6! As we draw an end to this course, let us revisit migration from some crucial persepectives.Let us be clear that the history of immigration has linked to it various forms of social, economic and political injustices, that are still being propogated.
It is important to be informed by this, and to debunk myths that are perpetuated by nationalism and white supremacy. It is also important to be aware of how immigrants and migrants form an essential part of out living days, without often being noticed, acknowldged or supported adequately
We look at some films like Roma (that address internal migration) and other that explore transborder migrations. This is also a time to rethink borders, both internal and external, also the borders of class, race, gender and more.
Here is an short film made by Kireet Khurana about the injustice towards migrants in India.
Some background on this issue: "Over the last 40 years, India has seen the largest internal migration that any country has witnessed in any era. Even on conservative assumptions, India’s 100 million internal migrants are sending ‘home’ vast sums of money, eight times larger than the Government of India’s healthcare and education budgets combined" The Economic Times describes "Internal Migration" in India as its "biggest intangible Asset ."
Yet, these domestic workers who travel from remote villages to cities to work, have been denied the most basic of rights, and are discriminated against.

The situation of immigrants in the US too has also become far more precarious during the pandemic. Yet several immigrants are also fulfilling the roles of essential workers.
Scan/browse through some of these links to get a sense of how immigrants in the US are misunderstood and discriminated against. How can we re-evaluate and approach the subject of migration with from these perspectives?

Living in Fear
There are a lot of aspects that encompass what an immigrant’s life is, and it is more than just what is seen every so often in the news. Among the required materials, this paper will focus on “Refugees as assets not burdens: The role of policy”, “A Legacy of Exclusion: The Geopolitics of Immigration and Latinas/os in the South”, Roma, and Living Undocumented. In these readings and films, the effect of the prejudice, historical issues, and policies on the daily lives and futures of the immigrants are revealed and seen more closely.
The most prominent similarity between the assigned readings and films is the instability and unpredictability of the lives of the immigrants. Diversity is clearly present and had always been for many decades in history, but different perspectives are raised concerning political and socioeconomic aspects that are affected by the presence and surge of people from other countries entering the United States. This uncertainty is also applicable to Clio from the film, Roma because although she was from Mexico herself, there is a significant gap between the social class of Sophie and Clio (Cuaron). It shows how different the opportunities are for people like Clio, and the film was also able to portray what it is like in Mexico. There were poverty and violence with a lack of opportunities for the natives to thrive and live a life that is similar to the opportunities that they could have in the United States of America. This is further supported by the real stories of migrants in Living Undocumented. Some flee from their home countries due to their search for better opportunities for themselves and their families, but for many others, they need to escape to survive from the violence and chaos of their community (Saidman & Chai). It was also mentioned in the documentary that political parties are big factors that affect the faulty and corrupt justice system in countries such as Honduras, Colombia, Mexico, etc. thus posing a threat to the safety of the people. In the article “A Legacy of Exclusion: The Geopolitics of Immigration and Latinas/os in the South” the presence of immigrants as part of history was discussed. Indeed, efforts to control immigration have long been present and it is d...
