In the Frontline documentary, In the Age of A.I., the producers provide a technical and sociopolitical
critique of the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, examining its impact across a variety if sociopolitical
concerns: global economic rivalry, corporate surveillance, the future of work, and the threat to democracy.
At the heart of the discussion are issues related to the collection and control of our personal data, and
further, how this information is utilized to profile, coerce, or otherwise control the public. Encouraging
developments, such as the use of artificial intelligence to raise people out of poverty, improve public
safety, and assist in the diagnosis of life-threatening conditions reveal how this technology can benefit
humanity in ways we are just beginning to comprehend.
For this journal entry you need to take the time to watch the 2-hour documentary located here:

Considering the isolation we are currently enduring, which both flattens the curve of the COVID-19
epidemic while rendering us almost entirely dependent on The Stack (see Bratten, Week 12), we find
ourselves interacting with artificially intelligent agents more now than ever. From tracking the movements
of possible pandemic vectors (https://twitter(dot)com/TectonixGEO/status/1242628347034767361) to the use
of bots to automatically scan, book and place your next Whole Foods/Amazon Fresh Delivery order
(https://github(dot)com/pcomputo/Whole-Foods-Delivery-Slot), artificial intelligence and the big data that fuels
it are in play this pandemic.
In 500 (not to exceed 600 words, strict), I would like you to do a quick and informal benefit/risk
assessment in which you clearly state the pros and cons of artificial intelligence as you see it. What do
you perceive as the most beneficial aspects of AI and, in turn, what are its greatest risks? Please provide
examples either from the documentary or from online resources. If you find something interesting, include
a link, otherwise there is no need to provide citations for this thought piece. (9 pts)
To sum up, provide suggestions for how society might promote the benefits of AI while also curtailing the
negative application of this powerful tool. This might be done through passing laws, creating open source
tools, a public education initiative, or some other creative endeavor you propose. (6 points)
As always, be concise and clear, but most of all, be honest in your assessment.

In the Age of AI
Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology that tries to mimic human reasoning in its systems. Computer programs possess the capability to learn and think using the data given. With its existence, artificial intelligence presents several benefits and risks. Its application is enormous and can revolutionize any professional sector as it attempts to solve problems in a better way than humans.
One possible and already implemented advantage of AI is its capability to reduce human error. As opposed to humans, computers are less likely to make mistakes. However, this occurs only when appropriately programmed and fed the correct data. With Artificial intelligence, decisions made are by collecting data that was previously collected. The systems then apply certain sets of algorithms to come up with meaningful information through processes that have fewer to zero errors. In the documentary, a robotics engineer suggests the shift to automated driving. He prefers this approach since human error, as he points out, is a leading cause of accidents and deaths.
Another notable benefit of AI, especially in the production industry, is increased productivity. Humans often get tired when performing repetitive tasks and are prone to error. However, with the application of artificial intelligence, companies can automate such increasingly redundant tasks. Organizations with such automation can run for long durations with no interruptions whatsoever. The documentary, for instance, suggests how AI has benefitted various sectors such as human resource, finance, stock market exchange, and many more, by allowing the performance of repetitive tasks. In this instance, AI has performed better compared to humans who get bored quickly.
Increased automation brought by the application of AI, however, will render some employees jobless. More employers prefer automated produ...
