Censorship: Parental advisory stickers
Apple joined other digital music vendors like Amazon by introducing the Parental Advisory Label stickers to tracks and albums that may contain explicit content on its iTunes Music Store. The stickers are to mirror the warnings that are on CD covers. The main purpose of introducing the stickers is to allow the parents to censor what their children are purchasing from the store. However, the system might be not effective in keeping the children from the adult language that is used in the music.
The sticker has turned to be more iconic than it was before and has become less practical. It has only made it easy for the parents to know what their children are listening to by researching the lyrical content of the songs that are labeled “EXPLICIT”, but this does not prevent the kids from downloading the songs. Today children who have access to a Wi-Fi connection can listen and watch whatever that can please them. Barriers to downloading the labeled songs have been blasted where the children can ignore or lie about their age in order to get access to the song. Ask any teenager how easy it is to ignore or bypass those restrictions of accessing what they want to hear.
However, it cannot be said that the digital powers have made it impossible to help those parents who want to censor what their children can hear or download. The “EXPLICIT” label on iTunes is carved in bright red letters that makes it easier to differentiate between dirty and clean songs.
