Visualizations play a significant role in the breakdown and interpretation of data collected for different researches and studies carried out across the political, economic, and cultural aspects of society. The use of bar charts, graphs, and other forms of visual aids or visualizations function to enhance a person’s understanding of the statistical data presented in a given research study. Market research, for instance, makes for one of the fields that make use of the equally diverse forms of visualizations in the presentation and interpretation of data. Such visualizations also serve to provide detailed information about a given dataset while also aiding in the understanding of the existing correlations between different variables in a given research study. However, it is important to reiterate the fact that the presentations provided by the various visualizations may appear to be misleading or biased in their representation of the observations made concerning a given dataset. The knowledge and information collected from a particular dataset are thus prone to misinterpretation by other individuals seeking to gain the same from the visualizations. Misleading or biased visualizations may result from an individual’s manipulative agenda in the presentation of the information deduced from the data collected or also resulting from the sophistication of the designs used in developing the visualizations. Biased visualizations further take various forms in misleading their users such as availing too much information or data, hiding or omitting relevant data, distorted presentation of data, as well as inaccurate description of data. Provided herein is an analysis of three misleading or biased visualizations for an enhanced understanding of some of the elements that are characteristic of biased visualizations.
