I have actively participated as a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, which is a professional business fraternty in the university. As a member of this community, i assisted the club in organizing social events, semi-annual award ceremony dinners, and the “Big Bear Retreat”. I organized these activities in my capacity as the vice president of operations. This duty gave me ample skills, knowledge and experience on how to run daily tasks and make sure that the various processes of the club run smoothly. The position gave me the skills to handle a wide range of responsibilities, and manage a duty that encompasses various areas of operations. This is because, though other club members and officials could focus on specilized areas, i had to do just about everything, from public relations, human resources, organizing, planning, and management.
The wide range of duties as the operations vice-president, saw me gain skills in logistics, as i had to make sure every equipment and resource required by the club for the various functions and activities were in order and on time. In my capacity, i found myself making sure that the club activites and events met the quality standards of the club and satisfied our members and visitors. Operations also meant that each item and equipment requested for activites and functions were within the budgetary allocations of our finance desk. This duty alsoimplied that i gained vital skills in effective strategic planning for events and activities organization, and resource allocation. In the process, of event and activity organization, i was involved in the management of third party relations, like the organization of event assistance and support services. These skills and duties led me to create the position of vice president of public relations, which is one of the highlights of accomplishments.
In the process, of carrying out theses tasks, i realised a need to create the position of vice-president public relations. This arose from the realization that the club required a public relations manager who would communicate the club to the university, community, local businesses, organizations and the government. This required a lot of effort given that the duty of public relations had been merged into other club activites, therefore, great planning was required in identifying the duties, responsibilities, goals and scope of this position. Effort was required in comong up with this position since, the need for a public relations manager had to be promoted to the club members and a vote had to be casted. It took effort and campaigns to educate and train the members of the benefits of having a public relations officer, and why i was best suited for this position. I also put alot of effort in training and educating a team that would assist in promoting the club and work as the public relations desk.
