Corruption has become a significant global problem that has adversely affected numerous political systems. In that light, the president of Peru, Pedro Kuczynski, decided to resign amid a corruption scandal. The individual was allegedly linked to a firm in Brazil, Odebrecht, which has been involved in one of the significant bribery scandals. Ironically, individuals or leaders who are supposed to be in the frontline fighting against corruption are the ones fueling it. That explains the reason why it has become hard to eliminate bribery at local and international levels. Corrupt politicians are the ones protecting people who engage in the biggest fraudulent activities and pyramid schemes. Although the impeachment of President Kuczynski was on the way, he did not wait to be removed from the office since it is shameful. On that note, the president resigned to stop the justice system from revealing some relevant information that might facilitate his harsh punishment or jail sentence.
Fuerza Popular, Peru’s opposition party, released videos that linked the president to the corruption scandal. In particular, it was working in close collaboration with lawmakers to provide the required evidence that would facilitate the impeachment of President Kuczynski. In December 2017, the president survived narrowly from being removed from office. The leaked video clip portrays a state official speaking with a lawmaker and explaining how to make quick money from government projects in his region. Kenji Fujimori, a congressman, assures the lawmaker of protection from the state. Notably, it has come to a point where politicians are using their powers and offices to protect corrupt individuals so that they can make money without considering the adverse effects of corruption on the country’s leadership and the well-being of citizens.
