Bill Eckstrom is the president of EcSell Institute, a company that provides growth solutions to organizations by focusing on and working only with leaders/managers and quantifying their performance. Eckstrom was delivering a TED talk on 31st January 2017 in the University of Nevada.
Eckstrom is a family man and had been a Sr. Vice President Business Development in a publicly traded healthcare company before he was fired I 2008. He had worked with the company for four years and risen through the ranks to the aforementioned position before he was fired. He narrated the ordeal of being unemployed and how he finally settled on starting his own company that dealt with organizational performance and behavior.
In his talk, he highlighted a concept he called the ‘growth ring.’ He broke the concept down to four steps he explained were limiting factors to the growth of an individual or a business. The rings were; stagnation, order, chaos and complexity. He described the ‘chaos ring’ as the ‘legitimate’ reasons that hold you back from moving ahead. Stagnation is being comfortable with your current life and achievements such that you don’t seek more opportunities. Order is living in the comfort of normalcy and predictable outcomes for each decision or action you take. And complexity is the learning experience that is associated with defying the norm and stepping out of comfort zone to seek a greater reward.
