Ethics is a branch of philosophy that aims at arranging, vindicating, and approving concepts of right and wrong human conduct. Ethical theories provide a basis from which individuals obtain advice in a situation where ethics are involved in decision-making. Knowledge and decisions laws differ from one individual to another and from one location to another, which result in decisions being made differently in an ethical decision-making process. Ethical theories provide diverse opinions for a different approach to a process of reaching a decision like overseeing and being by one’s duties to ensure one achieve what they perceive to be an ethically right decision. In decision-making, individuals purpose to achieve fairness, a kind deed, independence, and minimum damage to be effective.
Deontology is the theory of moral obligation that requires individuals to comply with their obligation and duties in decision-making that includes ethics (Graham, 2004).In this theory; it is believed that individuals look after the wellbeing of the society and individuals as they execute an ethically right action, which includes maintaining one’s duty. Individual who use this theory in a decision-making process tends to make decisions believing that they are founded on the determined duties of individuals. Utilitarian ethical theory on the hand involves one’s ability to see the repercussions of a particular act. The theory states that the one alternative that is most helpful to many people is what should be termed as ethically right. There are two types of utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism being the first type entails a situation where an individual executes actions that are most beneficial to other people irrespective of their opinion and community laws. Rule utilitarianism on the hand regard law and shows interest in fairness. Through fair means, it aims at helping most people.
A primary and secondary ethical decision is what makes up the ethical trap (Cottone and Claus 2000). When an inadequate primary ethical decision is made, a secondary ethical decision tends to rise.
