Apple and An Issue Concerning Consumers' Privacy

Essay Instructions:

I just received an email from one of Apple’s top executives. Apple is being asked by the U.S. Department of Justice to unlock the phone of a high-ranking drug dealer who was recently arrested as part of a major drug bust in Philadelphia (see link below). While Apple is currently resisting government requests to unlock the drug dealer’s iPhone, it is having second thoughts about whether that is the right decision.
Apple executives want us to advise them as soon as possible regarding whether they should comply with the government’s request. Take a shot at drafting a short (no more than 500 words) memo in which you recommend to Apple whichever decision you think is best and explain your reasoning.

Therefore, Apple should continue resisting the government requests the drug dealer’s phone as well as devices for other consumers.
The company should not relent in its resistance to government requests to unlock the drug dealer’s phone to avoid risking the privacy of its customers. As a technology company, the protection of the data of its consumers is one of its important practices. Agreeing to the demands of the government would mean the company’s engineers writing a program that decrypts devices of users. When such a program gets in the hands of law enforcement or hackers, there will be a risk to the security and privacy of its mill...
